About Saranac, Michigan:
Just inside Ionia County's border with Kent County, an easy drive to Grand Rapids and Lansing, the Village of Saranac is located on the south bank of the Grand River at the mouth of Lake Creek.
Built in 1907, the Saranac Depot served the Grand Trunk and Western Railroad. The Depot is now home to the Boston-Saranac Historical Society's museum. To the west of the Depot is designated parking for boat access to the Grand River and access to both the Fred Meijer River Valley Rail Trail and the Saranac Community Nature Park.
Fred Meijer River Valley Rail Trails is part of the Mid-West Michigan Rail-Trail Network which will eventually run 125 miles between Owosso and Alma. The segment between Saranac and Ionia, opened in 2013 runs through the scenic fields and woodlands of the Ionia State Recreation Area. This portion of the Trail is asphalt in town and crushed limestone in the rural areas.
The Trail is currently accessible but unimproved between Saranac and Lowell, where it will one day meet an extension of the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail, allowing trail users to travel to Saranac and Ionia and, via the Fred Meijer CIS Trail, farther east to St. Johns and Owosso.
