"Clarksville is a quaint little farming community that has survived the passage of time due to its location to adjacent hard-working small farms and its easy access to larger urban areas. First settled by Joseph and Martin Campbell in 1840, who started a cheese factory here, this town was originally called Skipperville, after the township organized under the Campbell name. In 1875, a post office was opened by Clark Howard, who re-named the place Clarksville and became the first postmaster. About that time, the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad made its way through and put the town on the map. It was eventually organized as a village in 1925. Today, it maintains a block-long main street section with several stores, churches, a bank and a local fire hall. It is located in southwestern Ionia County, about 3 miles south of I-96."
