The Challenges and Rewards of a First Year Michigan Accountant

Posted by Candice Harig on Tue, Jul 08, 2014 @ 09:00 AM

Candice First YearI have officially completed one year as a full time staff accountant at BHT&D CPAs. During this year, I have been able to develop the skills originally cultivated during my internship and have taken on more areas of public accounting.

While I have continued to prepare 1040s, 1041s, 1065s, 1120Ss and 1120s, I’ve had the opportunity to assist clients with the following:

  • Tax return appointments
  • Payroll tax returns
  • Government notices
  • QuickBooks questions
  • Quarterly financial statements for companies and estates
  • Nonprofits and governmental audits

During tax season, I had the chance to help the interns learn our software and processes. I reviewed the interns’ work and found myself catching some of the same mistakes I made just a year before. It was very interesting to be on the other side knowing what to expect as the weeks passed and how to persevere through the end of the season. I was also able to assist other staff members with a variety of our software, which was gratifying because I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others.

By working at BHT&D CPAs, I have been able to continue my education in the following areas:

  • Farm, individual and corporate taxation
  • ProSystem fx Engagement, ProSystem fx Tax and CS Professional Suite
  • School District auditing
  • Intuit QuickBooks software
  • CPA exam material

As a result of my experiences over the past year, I have become a trusted resource for family and friends. By being able to explain tax situations and helping them plan, I am getting better at serving our clients. I continue to educate myself by reading articles on changes in the industry and subscribing to email updates that will give me the information necessary to best assist our clients.

As I continue to learn and grow at BHT&D CPAs, I hope to take on more challenges and gain experience with more specialized industries and areas of accounting. I’ve had more diverse and rewarding experiences than I ever imagined I could in one year and I look forward to what my future holds.
