1000.jpgSmall employers who have been filing Form 941 - Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return - and expect that their employment taxes for the 2016 calendar year will be $1,000 or less may contact the IRS to request  to file annually on Form 944.

Form 944 is designed so the smallest employers (those whose annual liability for social security, Medicare, and withheld federal income taxes is $1,000 or less) will file and pay these taxes only once a year instead of every quarter.

To make this request:

  • Call the IRS at 1-800-829-4933 by April 1 of the current year or/
  • Mail the request to the IRS to Department of Treasury, Internal revenue Service, Cincinnati, OH 45999-0038 (address for Michigan employers) by March 15 of the current year.

Please note that this request option does not apply to household employers or agricultural employers and you must receive notification from the IRS to file Form 944.
